The studio

One step closer to completing my web/communications studio at home. Not even exactly sure of everything that I need. I wanted to build something where I could express myself in my own way. I think I have that now and I'm excited to start building some concepts.

Small business advantage

Up late sending emails about web strategies. It's interesting to think about how easy a small business can react to new technologies. If there is a tool that a small business wants to use they instantly try it out. Big corporations don't have that luxury. I guess what I'm trying to say is small businesses need to use their speed to react as an advantage over larger corporations. As a small business owner you may not have the money to out advertise these corporations but you can beat them to the tool before they have a chance to get going.

The New Year - know my boundaries

First post of the new year... I started off my resolution of 2011 with doing a better job of supporting the corporate website for the company I work for. It's a little difficult sometimes because everyone wants to do everyone else's job. I sometimes even catch myself focusing on the design of the site instead of the thinking about the strategy. The design is the graphic designers job and it's my job to figure out the best way to get people to the site and keep them there. It's important to know when to let someone who knows more than you on a particular subject take the lead. I've seen many situations where people who don't really understand something try to act like they know about it. It may not seem like a big deal but it hurts the project and may lead the group down the wrong path.

Reviewed a small business web site

Just finished reviewing a small business website. It was pretty fun giving recommendations and not having to do the actual work. I think I'm going to do a lot more of these. There are a lot of small businesses out there that have created sites with no way of how to get traffic to them. Early in my days I wasted a lot of money paying for banner ads and clicks without a return on my investment. I don't recommend this type of marketing for any small business getting started on the web.

General Morning Thoughts

Everything that I know how to currently do in my life is wrong when it comes to finances. It's so important for people to get the right teacher/mentor if you want to reach a place you've never been. I've always wanted to have a lot of money but it always seemed to be non-achievable. Now I understand why I couldn't get there. It's all about how you think about money and the life we live in. I wish I would have found mentors a lot earlier. I learned some tough lessons but I have to admit I learned a lot from these lessons.

General Thoughts

Had a pretty good talk with the two neighborhood boys yesterday. I hope they understood what I was trying to tell them. It's hard to sit back and watch kids make the wrong decisions without them understanding the consequences. Hopefully I got through to them.

Had a pretty good conversation last night with a small business owner. Explained to him some things he could do on his website. I'm going to review his site and let him know how to improve it. Pretty excited about this web stuff these days - it's actually pretty fun.

The difference

I've been thinking about what I will say this weekend when I give a small talk to some young people. I've narrowed it down to something very simple. The topic is keeping life simple and setting out in the world to make a difference in someones life. Each day you come into contact with many people. Out of all those people did you touch their life in some way that makes them want to do the same for someone else? If you can answer yes you did your job. If you answer no you need to try hard because their are plenty of people in the world today that need something positive in their life in this exact moment.
